Babe Ruth Extreme League
Updated Tuesday September 27, 2016 by Demitri Pagonis.
Purpose: These teams are more competitive than a typical recreational league experience. Instruction assumes passion from players/parents to develop throughout the year with an intentional plan provided by Pennsbury Softball. These Pennsbury Gems Black (Xtreme) teams are offered at 10U, 12U, 14U.
Tryouts: There are tryouts every August for these “next-level” teams. Pennsbury Softball management and outside instructors assist with tryouts and player evaluation/selection.
Coaches: Our coaches for this program are usually selected (see Pennsbury Softball Coach Certification) among our rising in-house coaching pool that have distinguished themselves on and off the field. We fortify these teams with professional skill position instructors (pitching, hitting, catching, speed/agility, etc.). In this way there remains a consistent message about the sport and player development. Occasionally we encourage older more experienced coaches to mentor or “manage” the team to insure that the game is played correctly technically and tactically. Each year, coaches must re-qualify to be considered part of the program. We often seek an experienced coach and assist coaches with softball experience. Pennsbury has seen the return of former league, Gems, and Pennsbury High School players back into our system as coaches… a great legacy continues.
Tournaments: Suburban Travel Softball League (STSL) and outside (ex. USSSA, ASA, Babe Ruth) tournament play continues to be an integral part of this program.
Rosters: Are selected at tryouts and are a reflection of position need and skill level of players.
Schedule: Year round instruction is provided. There are usually one or two practices per week supplemented by separate skill position coach instruction. STSL usually requires a game Friday and Sunday throughout the Spring season with many games scheduled on our several Pennsbury field complexes. There are no geographical boundaries limiting where the players who sign up for an Xtreme team come from. Pennsbury, as well as participating Babe Ruth leagues can sign up a group of players from any geographical make-up and form a team to play other Xtreme teams in special games or tournaments throughout the year. Xtreme teams are eligible to play at their own facility … or in local tournaments that might only be a quick drive away … or farther away anywhere across the country where tournaments are being held! Playing rules will match High School and College playing rules (ASA) to better prepare players for the next level of competition. At Pennsbury, our Gems Black (Xtreme) teams also represent our organization and league as our Babe Ruth District Team that might play locally and regionally. This new concept was adopted by Pennsbury in August 2016. These might be considered developmental teams striving towards the full travel club model. As an example, for our 12U Gems Black (Xtreme) team, the roster is generally first year (10-11 years old) players.
Costs: The cost per player is also considerably less than the travel club model but more than the recreational league experience. Varying year-to-year as team coaches and parents form a consensus to the extent of tournament and travel. An average may be between $500-1000 year.
